Required Course Materials
You will need to access a few materials for CHEM 102 Lectures and Workshops this semester, and they include:
Internet Access for Canvas and email communications. Check to make sure your Canvas account settings correctly lists your email address. All course materials will be hosted on Canvas.
Textbook: Chemistry - Molecular Approach (Tro, 5th ed.) is sold at LAPC Bookstore. You may use previous editions, which may be available at a lower cost. There may be differences between content and chapter organization, and you are welcome to contact me to ensure that you are learning the correct content.
ALEKS: ALEKS is an online responsive-adaptive homework system that personalizes your learning. You may receive a 2-week free trial but may need an access code to use ALEKS afterwards.
(Note: You must access ALEKS through Canvas for all homework assignments, not aleks.com.)Scientific Calculator: You will need a scientific calculator that includes the log/antilog and exponential functions. Cell phones and graphing calculators are not allowed on any exams.
Note: prof. winn recommends the CASIO fx-115 series. This recommendation is not sponsored, and you may use any scientific calculator for this course.
You will also need a variety of materials for CHEM 102 Labs this semester, and they include:
Microsoft Excel for graphing experimental data. All campus computers come pre-installed with it, and you may also access a free, full version by logging into your LACCD student email and then selecting Office 365 at the top left navigation bar.
CHEM 102 Lab Manuals: The customized Lab Manual with Selected Experiments (Postma, Roberts, Hollenberg) and the CHEM 102 Lab Manual (Pierce College Faculty 2019 edition) is only available through the bookstore. You will need a lab manual for every lab beginning Week 2. You may use an older edition, but there may be procedural changes, so please double-check before preparing your lab reports.
Lab Notebook: A 100-page duplicate-sheet Chemistry (bound) laboratory notebook is required for all labs.
Personal Protective Equipment: Your safety is our safety, and we as a class will take safety seriously so that everyone is safe. This includes:
safety goggles that fit snugly around your eyes. Eye protection during each lab experiment is required by state law and must be worn at all times.
shoes that enclose your entire foot including every toes and the whole ankle
tops that cover the entire torso and shoulders which means no exposed midriffs or shoulders
bottoms that run down to the knees which means no exposed thighs
a conscious attention that clearly follows procedures. For everyone's safety, no phones or electronics may be used indoors while experiments are in session.
Advice for Succeeding in CHEM 101
Consistently reading the textbook and completing the Course Guide prior to lectures will provide you a greater understanding of all worksheets, activities, and self-assessment questions in the textbook.
Study efficiently since more is not always better. Focus on quality over quantity, and read through the learning objectives in each PowerPoint. You will be well prepared for exams if you can effortlessly answer all questions from workshops and previous exams.
Form study groups. You benefit when you explain a concept to another student, and another student benefits when they do the same for you.
Be curious and ask for help because scientists are naturally curious. If you are struggling with any content, please visit me in office hours or a tutor at CAS for tutoring.
